Caracas, Venezuela | The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, affirmed this Monday that his country will no longer be part of the Organization of American States (OAS), an organization from which it withdrew in 2019 due to discrepancies.

“We left there, we left forever and we do not plan to return,” Maduro said during his television program after endorsing the words of his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, about the organization.

“I recommend that the OAS disappear, which is useless,” López Obrador said last Thursday in his morning conference.

Maduro agreed that the OAS should “disappear.” “Our path is UNASUR (Union of South American Nations), our path is CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States), our path is ALBA (Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America)”.

Venezuela ceased to belong to the OAS in April 2019 after having requested it two years earlier due to discrepancies, but recently the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, advocated the re-entry of his neighboring country to the organization.

“Of course I am interested and I am fighting for Venezuela to re-enter the inter-American human rights system,” Petro said on April 19 during the protocol session of the Permanent Council, the executive body of the OAS, in Washington.

Maduro and Petro had discussed Venezuela’s re-entry into the inter-American system in November of last year, although without definitive conclusions.

Maduro has maintained a critical discourse with the OAS for years and especially since the organization recognized the “democratically elected” National Assembly in 2015, headed by the opposition Juan Guaidó, as the legitimate authority of Venezuela, after questioning his re-election in 2018.

A representative of Guaidó met in the organization until the Venezuelan opposition itself put an end to the provisional government he presided over in January 2023. Currently, Venezuela does not have representatives.
