Interview with Dr. Layla Saeed: Insights on the Transitional Phase in Syria
Editor of Time.news: Welcome, Dr. Saeed. Thank you for joining us today to discuss the recent statements from Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit regarding the transitional phase in Syria. What are your initial thoughts on this growth?
Dr. Layla Saeed: Thank you for having me. Aboul Gheit’s remarks signify a critical juncture for Syria. His call for an inclusive transitional phase reflects an understanding that any successful transition must represent the diverse voices within Syrian society. This awareness is essential in fostering a stable and viable political landscape.
Editor: You mentioned the importance of inclusivity. Can you elaborate on why it is crucial for stakeholders to embrace this principle in the current context?
dr. Saeed: Absolutely.Inclusivity allows for the depiction of all segments of society—ethnic, religious, and political. In a nation like Syria, where the civil war has highlighted deep divisions, ensuring that all voices are heard helps mitigate conflicts and build a sense of national unity. Moreover, an inclusive process tends to yield more enduring solutions, as it empowers citizens and fosters trust in the transitional agenda.
Editor: Aboul Gheit emphasized the necessity of dialog in facilitating this transitional phase. What role does dialogue play in rebuilding Syria?
Dr. Saeed: Dialogue is pivotal. It opens channels of communication and understanding among groups that may have been adversarial in the past. Without constructive dialogue, we risk repeating the mistakes of the past. It is meaningful for leaders and the citizens to engage in conversations that prioritize national interests over individual or factional gains. Such dialogue can pave the way for reconciliation efforts and the development of a extensive roadmap for Syria’s recovery.
Editor: What do you think are the potential roadblocks to achieving a successful transition?
Dr. Saeed: There are several challenges. First, the entrenched interests of various factions and external actors can impede genuine progress. Additionally, without a reliable security situation, it will be challenging to ensure safety for all participants in this dialogue. Lastly, the international community’s role will be crucial, as they can either support or hinder the process depending on their diplomatic strategies and commitments.
Editor: In your opinion, how can the Arab League effectively support Syria during this sensitive phase?
Dr. Saeed: The Arab League’s involvement is vital. They should facilitate dialogues among Syrian factions, offer platforms for negotiation, and provide resources for humanitarian aid. Concurrently, they can leverage their influence to maintain the principle of unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Syria, which Aboul Gheit highlighted. Their active involvement could help build trust and encourage cooperation both within Syria and among neighboring countries.
Editor: what practical advice would you give to ordinary Syrians and international observers regarding this transitional phase?
Dr. Saeed: For Syrians, staying engaged in the political process is basic. They should advocate for their rights and participate in dialogues, ensuring their voices are heard. For international observers, it’s important to support local initiatives, respect the sovereignty of Syria, and promote a clear process. Listening to the needs of the Syrian people is key to fostering long-term peace and stability in the region.
Editor: Thank you, dr. Saeed, for sharing your insights on such an important issue. We hope to see progress in Syria soon.
dr. Saeed: Thank you for having me.Continued dialogue and effort will be crucial in shaping a hopeful future for Syria.
