This July 19, 2023, the Minister of Health, José Ruales, delivered the technological equipment for the complete automation of the clinical laboratory service of the Monte Sinaí General Hospital (HGMS) in Guayaquil. The investment cost was USD 1.8 million. The resources were destined for the acquisition of equipment, reagents, devices, supplies and furniture.
“With this new equipment we will not only be able to cover the needs of laboratory tests of the hospital, but of 30 health centers located north of Guayaquil, which must articulate with this hospital establishment,” said the health authority.
The implementation of this robotic analysis and testing system is due to the growing demand of patients in the laboratory service. In 2019, around 47,500 samples were processed per month, while this year that number rose to 125,000.
Minister Ruales together with other health authorities toured the repowered area, verified the operation of the equipment and analyzed the growth projections that the laboratory will have as a result of automation.
This technological innovation allows response times to be reduced and avoids possible errors in the transcription of results. In addition, it improves workflows without the need to increase personnel or physical spaces. The modernization covers all areas of the laboratory, such as: hematology, hemostasis, gasometry, biochemistry, immunology, urinalysis, microbiology and molecular biology.
Currently, the hospital maintains a mixed processing system. Some hematology tests, such as the reticulocyte count (developing red blood cells), are performed manually. For this area, digital equipment with the capacity to process 120 samples per hour was purchased.
The Ministry of Health promotes and strengthens continuous improvement plans in its hospital units through quality technological equipment.
