Award to the director of “Io Capitano” at Venice 80: “I dedicate it to those who risk dying on the journey from Africa to Europe”

Nino Luca, correspondent in Venice / CorriereTv

This award will be of great help to the film, it will give it the chance to have a wider audience”, says an emotional Matteo Garrone, receiving the Silver Lion in Venice – award for best director for Io Capitano. «This film tells the journey through Africa of two migrant boys who try to get to Europe and does so through their point of view. I clung to their stories, to their experiences, trying to give a voice to those who usually don’t have one”, explains the director, then giving the floor to Kouassi Pli Adama Mamadou, activist of the ex Canapificio social center and of the Migrant Movement and refugees from Caserta, whose story inspired him. «The film tells a true reality – underlines Mamadou -. I managed to get to Italy, but I would like us to dedicate this award to all the people who couldn’t get to Lampedusa. And I would like to remind you that when there is the desire and need to leave, no one can stop you. We young people need to be given the right of access, the visa to travel, and I believe that would be the tool to unblock human trafficking.” For Mamadou, «a regular entry channel, as President Mattarella also said, would help address the problem. I thank the festival and the entire community of Caserta who help immigrants with their integration”. Finally, a thought from Garrone to Morocco hit by the devastating earthquake: “The film was shot in Senegal, but also in Morocco, and therefore a thought goes to Morocco and the tragedy that occurred today”.
