▸On Wednesday, August 7 at 12.00 noon at the First Cemetery, with unspeakable sadness, we will say goodbye to our beloved teacher, fighter and friend Makis Mavrelis, who left early after an uneven battle with cancer.

From his youth, Makis was dedicated with selflessness and self-sacrifice to the cause of the fight for the defense of public education and for the right of workers for another society. He was throughout his political and trade union career a kind, modest, unruly, militant and pioneering campaigner. He was not absent until the last moment from all the small and big struggles of the people and the youth.

He was the soul of the competitive interventions of teachers and was for many years the President of ELME Kallithea Nea Smyrna Moschatos and a member of the Board of the Mathematical Society as a representative of the “Movement for Change in Mathematical Education”. From all the positions he found himself, he fought the battle collectively and always with a smile, solidarity and love for his students, colleagues and companions.

Makis did not love and fight only for the public school, he loved football, art and culture and he served this love both in ELME and in the Labor Club N Smyrna.

Makis will always be with us in every small and big fight for the overthrow of the unspeakable brutality experienced by our people, to pave the way for a livable life for the workers and the popular strata. For all the old and new fighters of the educational and labor movement, he will be a bright example of the man who “dedicated his life to the struggle and the left, without exchange, without compromise, out of excessive love for life.”

Deepest condolences to his beloved partner Lila and his loved ones.
