Since Saturday October 7 and the attacks suffered by Israel, we have been experiencing a state of astonishment. Hamas, a terrorist organization advocating religious fundamentalism, Islamist fundamentalism and the extermination of Jews, deliberately prepared, orchestrated and staged in the most macabre manner the most tragic massacres and attacks in history. of Israel and among the most dramatic in our collective history.

The rocket attacks, mass murders, people displayed like trophies, kidnappings of children, women or elderly people, rapes, beheadings have shocked the whole world. We think of them, among whom nineteen French victims have been recorded to date and thirteen of our compatriots are being held hostage or missing. With emotion, we express to them, as well as to their families and loved ones, our compassion, our affection and our unwavering support.

In this unprecedented context, it is our duty to stand alongside the brutally attacked Israeli people, to accompany them in their pain, to demand with them the release of the hostages and to act with the means of diplomacy to achieve it.

It is also our honor to say that nothing, ever, justifies terrorism. Terrorism cannot be put into perspective. Terrorism cannot be condoned. Terrorism never has extenuating circumstances.

Diplomatic initiative

It is, finally, our responsibility to say that, if Israel has the legitimate right to defend itself and prevent terrorism, the response of the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, whose policy of establishing colonies and the illiberal drift, can only be done in the urgent need to preserve the lives of Palestinian civilians, who live in distress and anguish. Self-defense cannot be exercised by inflicting further suffering on the Gazan population, already victims of Hamas fundamentalism, which in no way represents the Palestinian people. In recent days, hundreds of civilians have died in Gaza, thousands more have been injured, killed or displaced. We also think of them and their loved ones.

In an emergency, like the United Nations, we are calling for the restoration of water, the opening of humanitarian corridors to transport food and medicine and allow evacuations and offer refuge to civilians. We call on France and the European Union to take a strong diplomatic initiative, under the aegis of international law and the UN, to help find the path to dialogue and appeasement. Our country must work in its great tradition to prevent any extension of the conflict. Let us remember François Mitterrand, who, from the Knesset in March 1982, recalled France’s position, its historical weight, its friendships, its legitimacy as a natural interlocutor in the Middle East. There can be no lasting peace without recognition, by all, of two sovereign States, living side by side in peace and security, with respect for their peoples.
