“Aware and protected consumer” public organization organized a working discussion today on the topic “Possibilities and mechanisms of introduction of color labeling of food products”.

It was noted that evidence-based medicine data indicate that the development of non-infectious diseases is closely related to lifestyle characteristics. The burden caused by non-communicable diseases is about 93 percent in the general structure of mortality of the population. Research shows that the abuse of salt, sugar, fats has a direct effect on the above-mentioned worrying indicators.

The conducted survey showed that if the content of salt, sugar, and fats are indicated in food labeling in separate colors – risky and more healthy – it will have a significant impact on not buying and bringing the product. However, that institution is not implemented in Armenia.

“The abuse of salt, sugar, fats, and trans fats is harmful for organisms, it is the cause of a number of non-infectious diseases. Various tools are used in the world. one is that the food in stores should be labeled in separate colors. green will indicate that the food is more useful, red – not useful,” Babken Pipoyan, president of the “Aware and Protected Consumer” NGO, told reporters during the discussion.

He mentioned that they want the institute to be implemented in Armenia, but not in such a way that it is accepted with swords, but to create such a system that will satisfy both consumers and businessmen.

“The purpose of this meeting is exactly that. We have invited representatives of the Ministry of Economy, other state authorities, certification bodies and laboratories, as well as representatives of sector NGOs to collect opinions and the main document that should be developed, everyone will find themselves there,” Pipoyan said. .
