A few days ago, a female doctor of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata was raped and murdered. After this incident, people of all classes and professions of Kolkata are angry. Tollywood actors have also joined it.

After the RG tax scandal, the West Bengal state government has decided on a few issues for the safety of women at night. One of them is to exclude the duty of women as much as possible during the night shift. Strong practice has started anew on this issue. The question is raised, is it not possible to provide security to women at night? Indian Bengali movie actress Aparajita Adhya spoke about this in an Indian media.

We were told to keep the bags on our chests and not on our backs: Aparajita

Taking an example, Aparajita Adhya said, “We have a lot of shooting at night. Women also have to work at night in medical field or corporate. My Nanad used to come home from work at 2 am. Worked in a multinational company. So there was a night shift. But from childhood we are taught not to be out of the house after 9 pm. After 9 pm the girls of ‘gentle’ houses are not out of the house. The seeds of this education were also formed in me. But in my heart I wanted to go out at night. My opinion changed after I came to Kolkata after marriage.”

In her school life, Aparajita was taught to keep her bag on her chest and not on her back. Reminiscing that, he said, “We were taught in school that the bag should be carried close to the chest and not on the back. So that no one can lay hands on it. But now the work has changed. Parents have accepted. They understand that girls will work at night too. We want our next generation to live healthier and more flexible. There is such a ban on women. That means there is a problem in my city.”

Aparajita does not feel safe to perform after 12 midnight. Referring to that, the actress said, ‘We have to go to the village for the ceremony. I don’t perform after 12 pm. That goes without saying. There are so many scenes to see that I don’t feel safe. So I don’t go by myself.’

Disagreeing with the idea that women are raped because of wearing short clothes, Aparajita Adhya said, ‘People say that wearing small clothes is rape. I have never heard of anyone being raped wearing short clothes. Rather, I have heard reports of being raped after wearing a saree or salwar-kameez. Even a one-and-a-half-year-old child or a 76-year-old woman have been raped. Women’s clothes are talked about without giving importance to people’s distorted mentality. This idea should be broken by the girls themselves. No one else will.’

Urging girls to fight for their rights, Aparajita Adhya said, “Love, respect has to be earned. So the idea that girls should not work at night should be broken. Chaitidi (Chaiti Ghoshal) said during the run of ‘Ek Akash Nijh’, ‘The day I can walk home from Howrah station at night, that day I will feel free.’ Girls for whom security is not available, should be asked to stay at home. But girls have to fight for their rights.”
