We will ask the Council of Ministers of Agriculture for a deposit guaranteeing the transit from Ukraine

The government approved the Bulgarian position for the upcoming meeting of Council of the European Union on Agriculture and Fisheries, which will be held on April 25, 2023 in the city of Luxembourg, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Ministers are expected to hold a debate on the state of agricultural markets, particularly as a result of the invasion of Ukraine. Our country will inform the participants of the meeting with the decision of the Bulgarian government not to allow nearly 20 goods originating from Ukraine to enter Bulgaria in the next two months.

A sustainable long-term solution is urgently needed to ensure the competitiveness of European farmers and normalize the market. Member States in which excessive imports leading to a market imbalance have been established should have the possibility to introduce a deposit fee which, after leaving the territory of the respective Member State, will be refunded to the importer.

Also in the framework of the meeting, the ministers will hold a political debate on the agricultural and forestry aspects of the proposal for a Regulation on the certification of takeovers of carbon. For Bulgaria, the most important issues regarding the future certification framework are the issues related to the quality and sustainability of applied agricultural and forestry practices, including the duration of their implementation.

Within the framework of the Council, it is planned to hold the first discussion of the strategic plans since the beginning of the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
