In his speech, Mayor Aquiles Alvarez said that “Guayaquil is always exposed because it is a big city.”
The Municipality of Guayaquil celebrated the 489th anniversary of the city’s founding with a grand party at the Crystal Palace, located on the Simón Bolívar boardwalk. The mayor of the city, Aquiles Alvarez, led a solemn session surrounded by figures of Correa’s party.
In his speech, which lasted no more than 10 minutes, Alvarez said that he has demonstrated “honest administration” in his tenure, and that “there are no foremen here, but rather a bunch of capable citizens.”
He added that “Guayaquil is always exposed because it is a big city, but we have always been covered with the shield of God’s faith.”
Alvarez ended his speech with a “Long live Guayaquil! and its rebellion, justice and dignity” and then emphasized that “Guayaquil people are proud, self-sufficient and brave.”
Assembly members and authorities of the Citizen Revolution, such as the first vice president of the Assembly, Viviana Veloz, legislator Pierina Correa and the prefect of Guayas, Marcela Aguiñaga, accompanied Mayor Aquiles Alvarez, who arrived at the palace at 5:30 p.m., escorted by all the councilors, except for Vice Mayor Blanca López, who was not in the front row.

The decorated ones
Decorations for scientific merit were awarded to Carlos Ortega Maldonado; for cultural merit to María Antonieta Palacios, Geovanna Andrade and Schubert Ganchozo, as well as for merit for social service to Father Simón Magisk, Andrea Fiallos, Olga Eljuri de Dumet and Santiago Salem Kronfle.
The mayor’s office awarded medals for sporting merit to the Guayaquil skater Samia Álava, to Sabine Manz, to the tennis player Raúl Viver and to the soccer players Damián ‘El Kitu’ Díaz and Augusto Poroso. The last two received a standing ovation.
Mayor Alvarez said that in 45 days the construction of the Fifth Aqueduct will begin and insisted on the redistricting of Guayaquil, whose social promoters are the neighborhoods themselves.
“This connection with the neighborhoods allows us to identify problems, work hand in hand and have day-to-day data,” said the mayor.
He highlighted the provision of student scholarships, “which should reach those who cannot afford them, those who have many shortcomings, but have a great desire to learn.” This involves USD 16 million in scholarships that benefit more than 13,000 students “and next year we hope to reach 17,000 students.”
