Finance Minister Ricardo Bonilla confirmed what many feared: the price of diesel in Colombia will increase in the coming months to align with international prices.

Although it is a measure that has not been well received, the minister described it as “unpopular, but necessary.” to address the country’s current economic situation.

Bonilla explained that, despite attempts at dialogue, The government failed to reach an agreement with freight transporters, who oppose the measure.However, the Executive has decided to move forward unilaterally with adjustments to the price of diesel, as it considers it an essential step to address what the minister described as an “imaginary inflation that can only be resolved in the real world.”

According to the plans of the Ministry of Finance, the increase will be gradual.By the end of this year, diesel will increase by $3,000 per gallon, and in 2025, an additional adjustment of the same magnitude will be made, adding up to a total of $6,000 over the next two years. Although the mechanisms and timing of implementation have not yet been precisely defined, the decision has already been made.

This announcement follows the measures the government had already taken in relation to diesel. On June 24, the Ministry of Finance imposed a surcharge on companies that consume more than 20,000 gallons of diesel per month, as part of a strategy to control the use of fuel in large volumes.

The adjustment in the price of diesel, although necessary according to the Governmentis a sensitive issue that has generated concern in various sectors, especially among freight transporters.which warn about the impact it could have on transportation costs and, therefore, on the prices of consumer products.
