The Chancellor was holding a large bag and a yellow briefcase when he entered the Bundestag early on Wednesday. A few minutes later he was standing at the lectern with the folder open in front of him, and then he started. His first government speech lasted 90 minutes. Scholz followed the sober style of his predecessor Angela Merkel, who gave 70 government speeches in her 16-year term in office. Anyone who expected a firework of emotions was disappointed – and the opposition did not leave that uncommented afterwards in the almost two and a half hour debate.
