The last few weeks have been trying for the first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS), Olivier Faure. In Ariège, the election of socialist dissident Martine Froger to the detriment of the “rebellious” candidate, labeled New People’s Ecological and Social Union (Nupes), Bénédicte Taurine, weakened it, reinvigorating its internal opponents hostile to Jean- Luc Melenchon. Abused since his narrow re-election at the head of the rose party, at the Marseille congress in January, Mr. Faure launched a counter-offensive by taking on the role of conductor of a revisited Nupes.

In a grandstand published in Releaseon April 16, the deputy of Seine-et-Marne invited his partners of the alliance on the left to “building a coalition contract”after a first step “imperfect but founding”. “The idea is to speak again, to give content to the collective framework, with deadlines and a work schedule”deciphers the secretary general of the PS, Pierre Jouvet.

For the boss of the socialists, the ” gathering ” from the left should not “not become a ceiling”a subliminal reference to the glass ceiling embodied by Mr. Mélenchon. “We need to expand”, he proclaims. Mr. Jouvet continues: “We have to get everyone, including the people who voted for Macron. We have to go from 30% to 40%. » A way to open the door to the socialists who, like the president of Occitanie, Carole Delga, or the former interior minister of François Hollande, Bernard Cazeneuve, dream of winning back the center left electorate. Except that, for Olivier Faure, the center of gravity of the left must remain Nupes. And there is no question of excluding the elected representatives of La France insoumise (LFI).

But he finally takes the risk of displeasing them, by inviting all left-wing forces to develop a common political project, distinct from the programmatic agreement signed with LFI before the 2022 legislative elections, which was strongly inspired by the program “The Future in common” by Jean-Luc Mélenchon. “It will probably be a dispute with LFI”admitted the first secretary during a meeting organized by Génération.s, the party founded by Benoît Hamon, on April 12.

A primary for 2027

By opening this project, Mr. Faure is addressing both his partners and his internal opponents, who accuse him of not having worked on the substance and of being subservient to the founder of LFI. The mayor of Rouen and number two of the PS, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, likes, for example, to recall that he is “the only one to have made public a counter-proposal on pensions”when the first secretary refused. “There is never a debate on the political line”, criticizes the socialist deputy of Tarn-et-Garonne, Valérie Rabault. For the latter, the problem is not so much the alliance with LFI as the absence “identity” et “ideas” you PS. “That we have not talked enough about the socialist project is obviousadmits Christophe Clergeau, spokesman for the party and friend of thirty years of the first secretary. The challenge is to find a new political synthesis within one or two years. »
