During the National Congress of Entrepreneurial Merchants, held in Barranquilla and organized by Fenalco, The Attorney General of the Nation, Margarita Cabello Blanco, issued a strong warning about the consequences of weakening the control bodies in Colombia. According to the Attorney General, this measure could seriously affect the rights of citizens and erode trust in public institutions.

In her speech, Cabello Blanco was emphatic when pointing out that «Weakening the control bodies would mean a direct threat to democracy, increasing corruption and favoring a dangerous concentration of power in the Executive.«. The Attorney General stressed the importance of maintaining the independence and strength of the institutions that exercise control over political and governmental power.

Warning about effects on democracy

Cabello Blanco stressed that eliminating or weakening the Attorney General’s Office would not only affect the transparency of the governmentbut it would also put the social and economic stability of the country at risk. According to the official, democracy could be seriously affected, since the necessary balance between control bodies and the government would be broken, which would leave citizens with less protection against possible crises.

“Breaking this balance of checks and balances in the State could result in less vigilance over transparency and legality in the exercise of power,” explained the Attorney General, adding that this imbalance would directly affect the democratic legitimacy of the country.

During her speech, the Attorney General also addressed other critical issues facing the country, such as insecurity and the economic situation. According to Cabello Blanco, Colombia is going through a crisis that threatens its development, with visible effects on security and the economy. Furthermore, he pointed out that populism and polarization are seriously affecting life in society, generating deep divisions and weakening social cohesion.

“Polarization is negatively impacting the coexistence and stability of the country, which increases social tensions and affects our ability to move forward as a nation,” he added.

The Attorney General did not leave aside the major concerns that currently affect the country, such as the increase in the costs of public services, the rise in gasoline and diesel prices, and the growing threat of water, gas and energy shortages. In addition, he stressed that the increasingly high cost of living is generating anguish and uncertainty in the Colombian population.

Margarita Cabello concluded her intervention by highlighting the importance of maintaining and strengthening control bodies such as the Attorney General’s Office, at a time when the country faces great social and economic challenges. “It is essential that citizens trust that institutions safeguard their rights and that power is exercised with total transparency,” he concluded.
