Weapons for personal use in Brazil reach 3 million – 02/14/2023 – Brazil

by time news

A study published this Monday (13) by the Sou da Paz Institute indicates that the number of weapons in the hands of civilians skyrocketed during the government of Jair Bolsonaro and reached 2,965,439 by the end of 2022. These data represent more than double the those registered in 2018, when there were 1,320,582 firearms in the hands of civilians.

The figures were collected through the Access to Information Law and analyzed by the Sou da Paz and Igarapé institutes. Personal or private weapons belonging to CAC (hunters, sports marksmen and collectors), common citizens registered for self-defense, subsistence hunters, officials (such as police and civil guards) with prerogative of carrying and who acquired weapons for personal purposes, and members of military institutions (military police, military firefighters, etc.) who acquired weapons for personal use.

“We live the result of a four-year policy to facilitate access to weapons. It is a set of rules, decrees and ordinances of those years that increased the number of weapons in the hands of citizens and CACs, and also the power of these weapons “, says Carolina Ricardo, executive director of the Sou da Paz Institute. “President Bolsonaro has asked more than once that people buy rifles and not beans. Therefore, the result only corroborates what has been seen in these years.”
