Located in the Eastern Andes of Colombia, Bogotá has a mainly cold and dry climate.

The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) states that the capital has an average temperature of 13.1 degrees Celsius.

During the day, the maximum temperature ranges between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius; while at night, the minimum temperature drops between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius.

However, at the beginning of the year, temperatures can drop to as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius.

Bogotá has two distinct rainy seasons: from March to June and from September to December, with April being the month with the most rainfall. During these times, torrential rains, hail, and electrical discharges can occur.

On the other hand, the dry season runs from January to February, as well as from July to August, with January being the driest month. During these times, sunny and hot days are recorded, with a blue sky and few clouds.

The weather in Colombia is very varied, as the climate is modified due to its geographical complexity, including the Caribbean Sea coasts to the north, the Pacific Ocean current, as well as the mountain ranges that traverse it from north to south.

According to IDEAM, there are at least four climate types in the country: tropical, dry, temperate, and high mountain cold.

For tropical climates, four subtypes are identified: rainforest or equatorial rainy, forest or monsoon rainy, savannah with dry winter, and savannah with dry summer.

The rainforest or equatorial rainy climate encompasses areas like the center and north of the Amazon, the entire Pacific Region, parts of Antioquia, western Santander, Boyacá, and Cundinamarca, the Catatumbo region, and the Amazon foothills. Meanwhile, the forest or monsoon rainy climate reaches the Llanero foothills and the southern extremes of the Caribbean region.

The savannah with dry winter includes most of the Caribbean and Orinoquia regions, as well as the low sectors in Santander and Antioquia. Regarding the savannah with dry summer, it includes the inter-Andean valleys in Tolima, Huila, Valle, Cauca, and Nariño.

For the dry climate, Colombia experiences the very hot arid or desert and very hot semi-arid or steppe climate. The first is evident in the high part of La Guajira, while the second is observed in the middle and lower zones of the same department as well as sectors of the Caribbean coast.

The temperate climate is felt in the middle and lower areas of the three mountain ranges in Colombia; while the high mountain cold, as its name suggests, is found in the upper levels of the three mountain ranges.
