What will the weather be like on the weekend of July 26-28, 2024 in Guatemala?
He National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology —Insivumeh— has issued its Weather forecast for the weekend of July 26-28, 2024 in Guatemala. This forecast anticipates a variable climate with cloudy weather alternating with scattered clouds, drizzle and rain accompanied by electrical activity due to the influence of a low pressure system. These conditions will occur mainly during the afternoon and night.
The wind in Guatemala City will continue to blow from the north. In addition, it is noted that the aforementioned weather conditions are favorable for the development of local storms, which can generate abundant rain, strong winds and, in some cases, possible hail. It is important that Guatemalans be prepared for these climatic variations and take the necessary precautions.
Passage of an easterly wave and monitoring of cyclones
This weekend, an easterly wave is expected to pass from the central Caribbean Sea. It could approach Guatemala on Sunday, July 28, and withdraw on Monday.
Regarding cyclone monitoring, no tropical cyclone formation is reported in the Pacific Ocean or the Atlantic. However, the National Hurricane Center of the Central Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Central Pacific Hurricane Center ―NOAAfor its acronym in English― is monitoring an area of disturbed weather that could interact with a tropical wave in the Atlantic. Although there is a 0% probability of development in the next 48 hours, this figure increases to 20% in the following 7 days.
Regions that could experience more rain
By Friday, the regions of the West, the Northern Transversal Strip, Bocacosta and the Central Highlands were identified as the areas with the highest rainfall. On Saturday, the highest rainfall accumulations are expected to occur in the Caribbean, the Northern Transversal Strip and Bocacosta.
The approach of the easterly wave on Sunday could increase rain and cloudiness nationwide, with the highest accumulated precipitation in the regions from the south to the center of the country, the Northern Transversal Strip, the Caribbean, the West and the south of the department of Petén.
Departments that should be on alert
Insivumeh recommends taking the necessary precautions due to the expected rains, especially in San Marcos, Chiquimula, Izabal and Zacapa, where sudden river flooding could occur. In addition, the departments of Quetzaltenango, San Marcos, Suchitepéquez, Santa Rosa, Jutiapa, Alta Verapaz, Petén and Izabal should be alert to mass movements, such as landslides, avalanches or mudflows. A decrease of weak to moderate lahars is also expected in the ravines of the Fuego volcano and in the riverbeds that descend from the dome complex of the Santiaguito volcano.
On Saturday, July 27, an increase in wave height is expected from 9:00 pm to 12:00 am in Manabique, Izabal. Likewise, in Quetzalito, Izabal, an increase in wave height is expected from 3:00 pm to 12:00 am. Caution is recommended during fishing and boating activities in these areas, as well as in nearby communities, due to the possibility of an increase in wind speed.
