The new week in Germany starts with rain and stormy winds. When it comes to rain, November has already more than met its target – even though it’s only half over.

The rainy and sometimes stormy autumn weather remains Germany also received at the start of the new week. November has already been unusually wet and the rainfall target for the entire month has already been exceeded, said meteorologist Christian Herold from the German Weather Service (DWD) to the German Press Agency.

From the beginning of the month to Saturday, meteorologists recorded 130 percent of the amount of rain that fell on average in the November months of 1991 to 2020. “November is still going on for a while, it could be even more,” said Herold. In many parts of Germany, but especially in the southwest and on the edge of the Alps, it was significantly too wet. Only the northeast side of the Thuringian Forest, the region around Dresden and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains as well as the Zittau Mountains are “at target or slightly below target” in terms of rainfall, according to the expert.

Continuous rain with amounts between 25 and 40 liters could occur in a strip from the Emsland to the Harz until Monday afternoon. The sun is only likely to show up at times in the foothills of the Alps, where it stays dry for longer; In the rest of Germany it is mostly cloudy with occasional rain. It remains mild with highs between 8 degrees in Western Pomerania and 14 degrees on the Upper Rhine. In the north and northeast there is a weak east to northeast wind, in the Baltic Sea it is moderate, in other regions there is a moderate to strong wester wind. Meteorologists expect squalls on the mountains. It will also rain at times on Tuesday night and it will cool down to 7 to 2 degrees.

Lows below freezing

On Tuesday it will also be mostly overcast, although there will be occasional breaks, especially in the north. Shower-like rain is expected at times, which will increasingly mix with snow in the higher mountains. Temperatures reach 6 degrees in the northeast and up to 11 degrees in the Upper Rhine. A strong gusty northeast wind is expected on the Baltic Sea.

The night of Wednesday will mostly remain overcast in the south; snowfall is expected, especially in the low mountain ranges and the Alps, which will initially come down as rain in valley areas. The lowest values are between three degrees in the Upper Rhine and up to minus four degrees in the northeast, and in the higher eastern mountains even down to minus six degrees. It’s still snowing in the Alps during the day on Wednesday, but later the clouds clear up there and it’s mostly dry. In the north it is usually clear after the fog or high fog fields have cleared, but later dense clouds appear. Some rain is likely to fall on the North Sea in the evening. The maximum values reach one degree in Lusatia and the Alps and eight degrees in the Lower Rhine. Permanent frost is to be expected in higher mountain areas.
