The blue and white of our flag was hoisted on the morning of this September 1 in the Plaza Libertad, San Salvador, thus inaugurating the civic month in the capital and throughout the country. The mayor of San Salvador, Mario Durán, presided over the inauguration ceremony of the civic month together with other authorities.

“Now we are experiencing true independence and El Salvador is shaping up to be a country recognized throughout the world as an example of what can be achieved when people are put at the center. This same Historic Center where we find ourselves today was synonymous with insecurity, death, disorder and hopelessness for decades, but today it is the opposite, in less than three years we have managed to free 90% of the heart of El Salvador to return it to the people,” said Mayor Durán.

The mayor recalled that the independence movement of the entire region began in the Salvadoran capital in 1811, and highlighted the significance of initiating the celebrations of true Independence in front of the Monument to the Próceres, one of the cultural heritage of the city. In addition, he highlighted the importance of continuing the Historic Center Revitalization Plan to transform the heart of the country.

The municipal chief mentioned that in the past 200 years the Salvadoran people never had peace, they were not sovereign, free, or independent, until today. “Now we are in a unique moment in our history, living in the safest country of all time and with the opportunity to continue making history together with our President, our deputies and the mayors who work every day to give Salvadorans the country they deserve.”

During his speech, the mayor of the capital urged all Salvadorans to join the commemorative activities for the 202 years of Homeland Independence and to continue defending freedom and sovereignty.

“On behalf of the mayor of San Salvador, I want to reaffirm our commitment to continue working to build a better capital for all. This 2024 will be a key year and we are ready to continue working together with our president Nayib Bukele ”, he concluded.
