Interview with Sarah Thompson, Entertainment Expert, on HBO-Max’s “IT: Welcome to Derry”
Time.news Editor: Welcome, Sarah! We’re thrilled to have you here today to discuss the exciting new series, “IT: Welcome to Derry.” Right off the bat, what is your initial reaction to the announcement of this prequel on HBO-Max?
Sarah Thompson: Thank you for having me! I’m genuinely excited about “IT: Welcome to Derry.” The original films by Andrés Muschietti have left such a strong impression on audiences. A prequel gives us an opportunity to explore the backstory of Derry, Maine, and the characters we’ve come to love—and fear.
Editor: Absolutely! The return of the “IT” franchise is something horror fans have been eagerly anticipating. Do you think this series can capture the same atmospheric tension that the films did?
Sarah: I believe it can, especially since Andrés Muschietti is involved. He understands the essence of Stephen King’s work and has an eye for creating visually impactful and psychologically thrilling scenes. By exploring Derry’s history, we may uncover deeper layers of horror related to the town’s past.
Editor: That’s a compelling point. The connection to the original films is vital. Do you think fans will appreciate the exploration of Derry’s origins, or are they more interested in the familiar characters and scares?
Sarah: It’s a delicate balance. While fans certainly have a passion for familiar characters—like Pennywise—the origin story can provide a fresh perspective. Derry isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a character in its own right. By delving into its history, we might understand why such horror manifests there and how it influences the characters we know.
Editor: Interesting! The series is set to premiere in 2025. What do you hope to see in terms of character development and story arcs?
Sarah: I’d love to see a mixture of both new characters that might become intertwined with the lore of the franchise, as well as deeper explorations of existing characters. It could be fascinating to see the lineage of fear that runs through generations in Derry. Perhaps even hints at the events of the films could create a seamless narrative bridge.
Editor: The idea of intertwining history and character development is intriguing. With the growing trend of franchises expanding their universe—like in the case of “IT” and others—do you think it’s becoming more challenging to create something original and captivating?
Sarah: That’s a great question! It can be a challenge, indeed. As franchises expand, they run the risk of saturating the market or falling into the trap of formulaic storytelling. However, if done right, exploring the rich backstory can add depth. It’s about ensuring that the story feels necessary and not just a cash grab. Strong writing and innovative ideas will be crucial for “IT: Welcome to Derry” to truly stand out.
Editor: Very true! Lastly, as fans await its release, what advice would you give them to prepare for this new series?
Sarah: I’d recommend revisiting the original “IT” films to immerse themselves in the atmosphere and themes. It might also be interesting to read Stephen King’s novel, as the lore of Derry has many layers that have yet to be explored on screen. This will set the stage for what is sure to be another thrilling ride through the terrifying world of Derry!
Editor: Thank you so much, Sarah! Your insights have been invaluable. We’re all looking forward to “IT: Welcome to Derry” and can’t wait to see what chilling stories unfold.
Sarah: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure discussing it. I can’t wait to see how this new chapter in the “IT” universe unfolds!
