What shame and what pain! Ecuador is among the 11 most dangerous countries in the world, where a crime is committed every hour, there are kidnappings, extortions, assaults, massacres in prisons, homes and streets.

We live in fear of so much insecurity, justice, politics, law enforcement and high administrative levels have been contaminated with dirty money from drug trafficking. The anxiety places us in the difficult times that Colombia and Mexico went through, but which were overcome with enormous collective efforts.

In the midst of so much anguish, a hopeful light emerges: the frontal and heroic fight of a responsible and patriotic woman, the Attorney General of the State, Dr. Diana Salazar, who, with admirable tenacity, develops, through the exhaustive analysis of the chats recorded in the cell phones of a murdered mafia boss, an extensive network of messages, orders, suggestions, threats, intimidations that show the enormous power achieved by that boss and which he displays by expressing, in a conversation with another drug trafficking leader, “we are owners of Ecuador, we are the top.” That, unfortunately, is the sad truth that surrounds us.

The always remembered Dr. Francisco Huerta, warned, with frank harshness, that our country was becoming the narco-State that we have reached and whose functioning has been revealed, for the first time, thanks to the determined work of the Prosecutor’s Office, which shows that the criminal network has police officers who hide evidence, judges who provide information and advice to criminals; with majors, colonels and generals who have twisted their profession to transform it into actions to protect crime; with judges, prosecutors, national judges that benefit convicted persons and denature constitutional guarantees in search of impunity.

The videos, recordings and photographs obtained in this investigation are testimonies of the toxic relationship between drug traffickers and former presidents, assembly members, mayors and prefects.

We are at a turning point: we save the country or let it sink under the rule of drug trafficking, crime and delinquency. Dr. Salazar requests the intervention of honest and rebellious civil society. Consistency requires effective collective support, in the streets and out loud, not only on social networks, and reiterates the need for frank and transparent conduct by the Assembly, without fallacious actions, contrary to public offers of respect to the Prosecutor and her brave performance. The country has, with indisputable clarity, two currents: those who respect law and order, on the one hand, and those who opened the door to the drug state and seek to perpetuate it, on the other hand.

Well done, Mrs. Prosecutor, you have begun the reconstruction of the country!
