West Africa: 11 dead, many injured in bus explosion in central Mali

by time news

An explosion on a bus in central Mali has killed 11 people and injured 53, according to preliminary reports.

Security sources said the horrific incident took place when the bus was traveling on the road between Bandiagara and Kaundaka in Mopti area when it hit a bomb.

The region is known to be a hotbed of violence by armed groups.

Mali has long struggled to contain the activities of armed rebel groups that have killed thousands of people and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes for more than a decade.

MINUSMA, the United Nations mission in Mali, reports that as of August 31, 2022, 72 people have been killed in attacks such as landmines alone. More than a quarter of those killed were civilians, the report said.
