Mali has long struggled to contain the activities of armed rebel groups that have killed thousands of people and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes for more than a decade.
MINUSMA, the United Nations mission in Mali, reports that as of August 31, 2022, 72 people have been killed in attacks such as landmines alone. More than a quarter of those killed were civilians, the report said.
