As an unseasonably cold front slams into the Gulf of Alaska off the west coast of the United States, Mount Rainier in Washington state and the national parks in Northern California, which are still experiencing a midsummer heatwave, are experiencing the worst of the weather anomaly, with heavy snow temporarily closing highways.

Highway 89 through Lassen Volcanic National Park in California was closed overnight Tuesday after about 3 inches (7.62 centimeters) of snow fell, the National Weather Service said today.

Photos posted by the National Weather Service show the summit of Mount Rainier covered in white snow, while the Minaret Vista overlook on the southeastern summit of Yosemite National Park in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains also appears to have some snow.

“It’s absolutely unimaginable that you’d see snow in Minaret Vista in August,” said local Sheriff Larry Rich.

He, who just so happens to have a birthday, said, “This summer, with the winter scenery and snow, is a special memory for me, as someone who loves this place. I’m happy to be able to work on such a special day in such a special place.”

Snow also fell at Mammoth Mountain, a ski resort in California, but the weather service only warned hikers and campers there to use caution because the trails could be slippery.

Snow also fell in the Sierra Nevada foothills, near Icoga Pass and on higher elevations in Yosemite National Park, the National Weather Service said.

This is the first time it has snowed here in August since 2003, meteorologists say.

California has suffered from severe wildfires in recent years, and large-scale wildfires such as the Park Fire have continued to burn since July this year due to parched vegetation and extreme heat, but the spread of recent wildfires has slowed somewhat.

However, the weather agency warned that once this temporary cold front passes, the region will quickly return to summer heat.
