“You don’t need enemies if you have friends,” reports a user on Tiktok, visibly not amused. Accordingly, a person from a circle of friends set a trap for her – and “Last Christmas” by Wham! underplayed. The user was “gewhammed” and before the Christmas season even really started.

There will probably be a few more “Gewhammed” in the coming weeks – at least those who take part in the annual Christmas play “Whamageddon”. The title of the game is a combination of the name of the British band “Wham!” and Armageddon. The term “Armageddon” stands for an end-time battle.

The Rules: Get through Advent for as long as possible without hearing Wham’s Christmas classic “Last Christmas.” The game starts on the first of December and ends at the end of the 24th – use your local time zone if you prefer. Only the original version counts. So you can enjoy remixes and covers. As soon as you hear the song and recognize it, you’re out – you’ve been “hwammed”. Bonus rule: If you are eliminated from the game, post the hashtag “whamageddon” on social media.

Tip: Hurry to the supermarket!

“Last Christmas” was released in 1984. The song has become an integral part of all Christmas markets and shopping centers decorated for Christmas. Although it is more polarizing than any other Christmas classic, according to the Society for Consumer Research last year it achieved more streams in 24 hours than any previous track. With almost five million audio streams on Christmas Eve, the duo also pushed previous leader Mariah Carey out of first place in Germany.

The challenge enjoys international popularity every year, especially on social media. There are over 13,000 posts under “#whamageddon” on Instagram alone. Users report on their experiences and share tips and tricks for successfully avoiding the Christmas song.

It’s actually hard to imagine that this would work. But possible – at least that’s what successful “#whamageddon” winners report.

If you want to give it a try this year, here are some tips and tricks to avoid “Last Christmas”: Reduce the radio to the minimum number of stations. It is also advisable to check Spotify playlists for the song. Also, keep the time you spend shopping in the supermarket to a minimum – maybe you’re lucky and the only song playing on the speakers is Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. And at the Christmas market? It’s best to pull the hat well over your ears. Also avoid social media! Among the “Whamageddon” players, some don’t hesitate to catapult you out of the game with videos that include a Wham song.

And get “wammed” – enjoy the classic. Good luck!
