the joys of solitude[1]
It deals with stories about things deep in the heart. In life, you may wonder, ‘Why on earth is this like this?’ ‘Why can’t my mind do what it wants?’ Please let us know any questions you have by emailing us ([email protected]). Let’s think about it together.
“Solitude does not make you discouraged, but rather gives you the strength to create the activities you need for yourself.”
Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh wrote this in a letter to his close friend, Anton van Lapart. Although he sometimes battled extreme loneliness, he used solitude as nourishment for his art. ‘Bedroom in Arles’, one of his representative works, conveys the emptiness of an empty room despite its use of brilliant colors. In addition to this, there are many works in his paintings that reveal loneliness in nature without anyone, such as ‘The Poet’s Garden’ and ‘Wheat Field Landscape Under a Cloudy Sky’.
Van Gogh said that he was not discouraged by loneliness, but in fact, in many cases, it is easy to become discouraged and withdrawn when alone. Even if ‘eating alone’ and ‘drinking alone’ have become part of daily life, if you spend time alone repeatedly, you may wonder, “Why don’t I have any friends?” You may be caught up in skeptical thoughts such as “Have I not lived my life well?” or “Not many people like me.” Words like ‘lonely death’ make loneliness feel more lonely and miserable.
