What are the “new GMOs”? Understand in three minutes

From the 1990s, genetically modified plants (GMOs) began to be widely used around the world, and in Europe they were subject to very restrictive legislation and mandatory labeling. But in recent years, new GMOs have appeared on the market, and the question of whether or not to subject them to the same restrictions arises.

The objective with GMOs was to give an organism a characteristic that it does not normally possess. And to do this, we would look for the desired characteristic in the genome of another species, or even another kingdom. This is what we call transgenesis, which subsequently gave rise to the term “transgenic plant”.

But new genetic modifications are no longer based on transgenesis. They are called NGT (new genomic techniques) or “new GMOs”. What differentiates them from traditional GMOs? Are we aware of any risks? What are the arguments of the supporters and opponents of these NGTs? We explore all of this in this video.
