DECRYPTION – Brussels has drawn up a list of innovative sectors to preserve from Beijing. So many sensitive areas which could be used for military purposes.

The United States, Japan and Australia already have one. This is now the case for the European Union. On Tuesday, the Commission in fact proposed to the Twenty-Seven a common list of “critical” technologies to protect from external appetites and the not always laudable intentions of third countries.

Launched by a communication in June on economic security which mainly targeted China without mentioning it, this list carried by commissioners Thierry Breton and Vera Jourova identifies ten areas, but mainly focuses on four technologies said to be high risk for the EU: semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies or biotechnologies. This concerns microelectronics, photonics, high-frequency chips, high-performance computing, cloud computing or, for biotechnologies, genetic modification techniques and new genomic techniques.
