what are the rates in other European cities?

The announcement was made a few weeks ago by the president of the Île-de-France region, Valérie Pécresse: the prices of Ile-de-France transport tickets could increase by 20% in 2023.

This increase would increase the price of a monthly Navigo pass from €75.20 to €90, and a single metro ticket from €1.90 to €2.30. To avoid this outbreak, the Minister of Transport Clément Beaune assured Tuesday, December 6 that the State would support Île-de-France Mobilités.

Public transport fares in the capital are the highest in the country but among the cheapest in Europe.

In France, between 40 and 60 € per month on average

The Parisian rail network has 220 km of metro and 587 km of RER. Outside the capital, only five French cities have a metro. In Lyon, which has the second longest rail network in France (32 km) in four lines, the price of a classic monthly subscription is €66.40 per month. The single ticket costs €1.90.

To get around Lille, the third longest metro network in the country (43.7 km), consumers aged 26 to 64 pay €62 each month. This price gives them access to the two metro lines but also to the Regional Express Transport (TER) of the Lille metropolis. The price of a single journey is €1.80 or €1.15 for a journey of less than 4 stations.

In Toulouse, which has 28.2 km of metro tracks, tickets valid for 31 days cost €55. Single journeys cost €1.80. For the Rennes metro (23.5 km long), the monthly pass is €52.95 and the ticket €1.50.

The cheapest transport pass is in Marseille. It is also the city with the least developed rail network. Barely 21.6 km for the second most populated city in France. The subscription starts at €40 and costs up to €68 per month for the “Aix-Marseille-Provence integral pass”. A single trip costs €1.60 for the first purchase (refillable paper medium) then €1.50.

In Europe, public subsidies in Madrid and Berlin

In our European neighbours, prices vary greatly from one country to another. The British capital beats the record for the highest prices with a monthly subscription which can amount to up to 384 pounds (i.e. 445 €), for zones 1 to 9. This price is explained by the extent of its network. (420 km of metro network and 4,300 km with suburban trains).

A subscription for the central areas still costs 147.50 pounds per month (171 €). The price of a single journey ranges, depending on the distance, from 2.50 pounds (2.90 €) to more than 15 pounds (17.4 €) for long journeys.

In the Spanish capital, the monthly subscription cost €54.60 for central Madrid, and €99.30 for a wider area. But since the beginning of September, thanks to a subsidy, the Madrid subscription has only cost €27.30 per month. The single journey costs €1.50.

In Germany, some Länder have also decided to help Deutsche Bahn. In Berlin, which has 331 km of urban rail network, the price of a monthly subscription was set at €9 for three months, from June to August, against €80 previously. It increased to €29 per month from October to December. From 1 January 2023 it will be €49, with single journeys costing €2 to €3.80. Conversely, transport subscriptions in other regions, such as Munich, can exceed €200 per month.

In Rome, the monthly pass to travel in the intramural Italian capital costs 35 € but it rises to 116 € to go to the suburbs. In Belgium, the tariff for the Brussels network is €49 per month, for a network of approximately 40 km.
