What are you seeing tonight: the comeback that no one asked for, but come on – why not

Probably not easy to release favorite characters, eh? In the 90s, Mike Judge created two of the most iconic characters of that decade, Beavis and Butthead. Then he went on to create some other icons (say, the great movies “Rumble in the Office”, “Idiocracy” and the series “King Hill” and “Silicon Valley”), but he never seems to release the two teenagers he loves so much. Wait, that doesn’t sound like much. Anyway, eleven years after the last season of Beavis and Butthead, and 30 years since the first, the legendary series is back with new episodes. Yes, what you heard.

Yesterday (5.8) the first episode of the ninth season of the series appeared on the streaming service of Paramount Plus, a few weeks after the movie “Beavis and Butthead Make the Universe” which officially launched them into 2022. The new episodes are based on the same old format of two ten-minute short stories , with video clips interspersed between them for the two to laugh at from their miserable couch. However, according to this year’s update, this time Beavis and Butthead are not only laughing at music videos, but also viral videos from YouTube and TikTok, and surprisingly – it works.

Maybe it’s because they actually made a reaction video before YouTube’s inventor was even born, and maybe because Mike Judge is a genius – the first episode shows that they haven’t lost their silly wit and fun humor. The plot parts are a bit squeaky from Nineties rust, but when the two idiots sit on the couch and mock a stupid country music video or fake that they’re not having fun in front of BTS, it’s funnier than any reaction you know. Even in the commentary segments of viral videos (in the first episode they respond to a girl who films the reading of a college acceptance letter and a man who teaches how to make prison tattoos at home) they manage to add to the experience, and to a certain extent fit 2022 even more than 1992. Welcome back fools, it’s hard to say we missed you, but you were definitely missed.
