In 1995, at the age of 22, Monica Lewinsky began an affair with Bill Clinton. At the time, she was working as an intern in the White House; he was President of the United States – and 27 years older than her. But what is Monica Lewinsky doing now?
Clinton’s extramarital affair plunged him into a serious crisis during his first term in office and almost cost him his job. On January 7, 1999, impeachment proceedings were officially opened against Bill Clinton on suspicion of perjury and obstruction of justice because he had tried to conceal the affair. He was acquitted shortly afterwards and remained in office until 2001.
Bill Clinton was able to save his image. But Monica Lewinsky, who celebrates her 51st birthday today, is still considered by many to be the most famous intern in the world or “the affair”. However, thanks to the #MeToo movement, she now sees the scandal in a different light. In 2018, she told Vanity Fair that it was a “gross abuse of power” on Clinton’s part.
Nevertheless, she maintained that the affair with him was consensual. However, #MeToo made her aware of the “enormous power imbalance” between them. “I’m starting to think about whether the idea of consensualness even makes sense under such circumstances.”
In 2021, Lewinsky spoke to People magazine about the affair with Clinton: “I was captivated by him, as many others were.” She added: “He had charisma, a dangerous charm, and it was intoxicating. We think we’re on this solid ground in our early twenties. We think we know everything, and yet we’re actually in this quicksand.”
Almost 30 years have passed since the affair. Lewinsky initially went into hiding and became a target for many Americans. With the help of therapy, her family and friends, she was able to process what she had experienced. She is now an author, producer, anti-bullying activist and speaker.
In February 2024, she attracted attention as a model. She is the face of the “You’ve Got the Power” campaign for the fashion brand Reformation. The photos by photographer Zoey Grossman show Monica Lewinsky in various looks: from an elegant red two-piece with matching high heels to a leather trench coat and an office outfit including a tie. The 51-year-old poses confidently for the camera in the pictures.
Monica Lewinsky also appears at public events from time to time, such as at the “Vanity Fair” Oscar party in March 2024. There, the former intern appeared in a tight black dress with a sweetheart neckline and no sleeves.
Monica Lewinsky keeps her private life out of the public eye, only occasionally sharing pictures of her parents on Instagram. “I feel like if anyone has the right to keep their love life private, it’s me,” she once told “People.”
She explained that the relationships she has are “very valuable” to her, even the ones that have failed. “I’ve learned a lot.” She is not married. “I don’t know if that will happen or not, and I’m more comfortable with that than I used to be,” Monica Lewinsky continued.
