As much as four million adults in Germany are known to regularly monitor their blood sugar levels, and some of them have to inject themselves with insulin based on their measurements. But exactly when and at what level do diabetic patients need to administer insulin, and when does it become dangerous?

The World Health Organization explains that the fasting blood sugar level for a healthy adult without diabetes should be between 70 mg/dl (3.9 mmol/l) and 100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol). If the value exceeds this range, it is considered a sign of diabetes. The diabetes information portal diabinfo.de notes that values between 100 and 125 mg/dl (5.6 and 6.9 mmol/l) are considered prediabetes, while anything at or above 126 mg/dl (7.0 mmol/l) is classified as diabetes.

Once the blood sugar levels exceed these values, insight and consultation with a primary care physician is critical. Blood sugar levels exceeding 250 mg/dl are particularly dangerous and could lead to severe hyperglycemia and potentially to a diabetic coma. For patients experiencing hypoglycemia when blood sugar levels fall below 70 mg/dl, immediate consumption of carbohydrates that quickly enter the bloodstream is advised. Moderation and close consultation with physicians are essential when dealing with these conditions.]
