BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir raised the question why the ruling Awami League government has decided to ban Jamaat in the current situation of the country.
In this context, he said, Why Awami League has not taken the decision to ban Jamaat? Why are they making this decision today? Although they will have many arguments about this, they will talk a lot.
He said this in a statement sent to the media on Wednesday (July 31) afternoon.
Mirza Fakhrul said, our words are very clear. We believe in multi-party democracy. Accordingly, those who do politics have the right to do politics. Now it is the responsibility of the people, whose politics they will accept and whose politics they will not accept.
The government creates one issue after another. It takes it back to the other side. Mentioning the banning of Jamaat as one such issue, Mirza Fakhrul said in the statement that the Communist Party was banned during Pakistan. Many, including Haji Mohammad Danesh, left the country and took refuge in India. When it was cancelled, they returned home after two years. This is what dictatorial governments do. People have no real relationship with them. This government also has nothing to do with the people, because they are not elected by the people.
BNP Secretary General said, today there is such a big crisis in the country. There is no government representing the people. Without a representative government, the crisis will not be resolved. Governments have no accountability, they have no legitimacy.
BNP Secretary General said, despite many hardships, we are hopeful when we saw in the newspaper that teachers from different universities of the country are coming down the streets for the sake of the students. Artists, cultural activists, journalists are coming down, giving their speeches. More than 100 prominent people have made statements today demanding an investigation into the murder. It is sad again, when I see, some people are brazenly speaking on behalf of horrible monsters, supporting the torture of students, their killing by shooting. The whole nation including us is recognizing them.
Mirza Fakhrul said in a statement that the families of the students killed in the quota movement are not well because their future is gone before their eyes. Their dearest thing is gone. Their 4-6 year old child is gone. What will the state respond to these murders? The state is responsible. We are saying, they have to take responsibility for these murders. Accept responsibility and leave power. The political crisis must be resolved politically. They have to hold new elections and hand over power to the people’s representatives.
The inquiry into the killings in the quota movement should be under the UN, he said, because we do not believe in judicial commissions and investigations. They are not neutral.
We support all student movements. I spoke against the ongoing evening law (curfew). BNP Secretary General also mentioned in the statement that the evening law should be completely lifted and the army should be taken back to the barracks.
