Farooq Ahmed was already adamant about not keeping Chandika Hathurusinghe. Even after becoming the president of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), he remained steadfast in his position. Even if he did not directly say about the exclusion, he also explained in various ways that he should not be kept.

Farooq was elected as the BCB president on Wednesday (August 21) by the directors’ vote. In the afternoon Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium faced the media. The subject of Hathurusingha inevitably comes up. Farooq told not to move from the previous position and said to look at the contract.

‘I don’t know exactly what the deal is with Chandika Hathurusingha. I am in the same place as before. I have not deviated from what I said. Now I have to look at some things officially. How to do what needs to be done, whether I can find someone better than him or those nearby who can do better… I will see it, then talk. I actually did not move from that stand.’

Hathurusinghe took over as the coach of Bangladesh in the second term in 2023. He has a tenure till 2025 Champions Trophy. BCB will have to pay compensation along with monthly salary to be removed before this. It is a lot of money. Farooq also indicated his willingness to do so before becoming president.

Farooq’s comments on what the change of coach will actually be, ‘It is difficult to say at the moment. Talk to our colleagues for two or three days. When a coach is brought in, there must be a short list of three or four. Will be able to come or not, it has to be seen.’

The new president also gave a positive indication about the local coach, ‘I think the local coach is very good. I shouldn’t be the only decision maker. Maybe the responsibility is more on me. Because, I will decide. But you have to talk to others too.’
