A new sign to know to avoid a fine. Since 2020, it is possible to see on certain roads in France a new square traffic sign representing a white diamond on a blue background. This is a sign used to reserve certain lanes, temporarily or permanently, for carpooling, reports West France.
From the Citizen’s Climate Convention, this panel was announced on August 29, 2020 in the Official Journal. It has since been gradually deployed on the French road network, such as in Lyon and Grenoble, as well as Rennes and Nantes from the start of the school year. In order to reduce pollution, it is used to reserve certain lanes for carpooling, i.e. any car with at least two people on board.

A fine of 135 euros provided
Several types of signaling are provided. In the event of a permanent reservation for carpoolers, advance signaling followed by position signaling and white marking on the roadway will be present. In other cases, the blue panel with the white diamond may be accompanied by a sign specifying the minimum number of passengers and the timetables.
In the event of a temporary rule, the panel may be switched on or off to allow motorists to know whether the rule applies, particularly in the event of heavy traffic. At the sight of this panel, motorists not respecting the specified carpooling rules (by default, at least two people on board) will have to leave the left lane.
After a period of prevention, drivers who do not respect the rule may be punished with a fixed fine of 135 euros, specifies The Dispatch. As such, a “specific radar controlled by artificial intelligence” should be installed in various places to control the number of people present in the vehicle.
