What happened to Aidita Pamela Ati between June 28 and 29, 2024? The 25-year-old second lieutenant was found dead in her room – inside the Military Fort of the 19th Napo Brigade, in the Orellana province.
Although the body was found at 06:40 on June 29, her father – Luis Ati – was notified three hours later, at 09:00. According to the initial report of the Ecuadorian Army, the young woman died of “Asphyxia caused by airway obstruction while sleeping“and the father explained that they told him that he drowned due to the alcohol intakeThis would be the first of many inaccuracies in the alleged rape and femicide for which four soldiers remain in preventive detention.
Two more soldiers are suspected of the death of Aidita Ati
On July 27, 2024, the Ati family’s lawyer, Paola Montoya, told LA HORA that, although the fiscal instruction (investigation time) ends on July 29, it could be extended since there will be a hearing to link two more soldiers: This is Second Lieutenant Luis F., who has testified that he did not go to the party, but that he sent messages with Ati and that he went to see her at night. He will also be linked to the capitan Maria V., who found Ati’s body.
This gives a total of six soldiers suspected of the rape and femicide of the second lieutenant.

1) The party: On the night of Saturday, June 28, 2024, an unauthorized farewell party was held at the Napo Military Fort. Ati and 18 other people participated, the same people who were investigated after the discovery of the body.
2) False cause of death: The body was found by the Captain Maria V., on the morning of June 29. According to Ati’s father, while he was traveling from Quito to Orellana, the body was removed and the autopsy was performed without his authorization and it was then that they revealed to him a “false cause of death.”
3) Suspects: Although the suspects were not initially sentenced to prison, on July 17 the family appealed and managed to get them to pretrial detentionThe four suspects arrested are in prison 4 in Quito. They are military and were Ati’s colleagues. They are linked to the case for his alleged participation as authors and co-authors in the crime of femicide.
4) Rape: Ati’s second autopsy report indicates that she was raped. The vaginal examination indicates that There was penetration 24 hours before his body was found.
5) The suspects’ version: The suspects stated that on the night of July 28, they took Ati to her room, as she was under the influence of alcohol. They laid her down on her bed, took off her shoes, her belt, unbuttoned the button on her pants “so that she would be more comfortable” and left.
6) Violent death: Paola Montoya, the lawyer for the Ati family, says that the autopsy reveals that Aidita Ati had a violent death. The bruises on her body (Bruises on the head, face, neck, chest, upper limbs and lower limbs) –says the lawyer– are signs that there was a sexual assault and that the second lieutenant tried to defend herself. It has not been confirmed that it was a gang rape, but it is confirmed that Ati was held down by several people.
7) Fluid samples and expertise: The defense is awaiting the examination of the fluid samples and the biological comparison that was taken in Ati’s room. They are also awaiting the report of forensic examination of the telephones of all the officers involved. Who was Aidita Pamela Ati Gavilanes?
He was born in Quito on October 20, 1998. His dream of being a soldier was born from his father who also belongs to the Army.
In 2022, the young woman graduated as a second lieutenant from the Higher Military School (ESMIL) and obtained a Bachelor of Military Sciences from the University of the Armed Forces (ESPE).
In September 2022, she arrived at the 19th Napo Logistics Support Command, where she was assigned to the role of Commander of the Supply Platoon. She had been in that brigade for two years and was found dead on June 29.
