New Delhi: Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan has opened up about taking a break from international cricket, which led to his ouster from the team. Kishan last played for India in the third T20I of the five-match series against Australia in November last year. He was then included in the squad for the tour of South Africa, but decided to opt out of the Test series due to personal reasons.

After a brief break, Kishan also decided to skip Ranji Trophy matches, which led to BCCI dropping him from the central contract list. Rahul Dravid, who was India’s head coach at the time, has suggested that if Kishan wants to make a comeback, he should play domestic matches and perform well. His decision to skip domestic matches was heavily criticized, but now Kishan has revealed that he was not in the right mental state to play Ranji Trophy matches.

Kishan said in an interview to the Indian Express- I took a break and I think it was normal. The rule is that if you want to make a comeback, you have to perform well in domestic cricket. It is as simple as that. Now, playing domestic cricket was very different for me because it did not make any sense. I was not in the mood to play and so I took a break from international cricket. It does not make sense that you take a break from international cricket and then play domestic matches. Then you would have played internationals.

Kishan also admitted that he was disappointed that he did not get enough playing time for the Indian team despite performing well. He said- It was disappointing. Today I do not want to say that everything was fine. It was not easy for me at all. You endure a lot. All this kept going on in my mind that yaar kya hoga, why did it happen, why did it happen to me. All this happened when I was performing well.

Kishan returned to action during the Indian Premier League earlier this year after skipping the South Africa tour and the Ranji Trophy. However, he scored just 320 runs in 14 innings at an average of 22.85 and a strike rate of 148.83. As a result, he was not selected for the T20 World Cup, and the management opted for Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson as the two wicketkeepers.
