Many internet users see countless hashtags every day. However, some of them don’t even know exactly what a hashtag is or how to use it.
Hashtags are used on the internet. Whether it’s about football, flowers or technology – there’s a hashtag for every topic. But what exactly is a hashtag and how is it used? Here you can find out everything you need to know about it.
A hashtag is a keyword marked with a diamond that is used in social networks to assign a post to a specific topic and thus make it easier to find. The term hashtag is made up of the English words hash (double cross or diamond) and tag (marking) together.
Common platforms where hashtags are often found include Facebook, Instagram, X or YouTube. There are also numerous other web services that support the use of hashtags and the search for them.
As can be deduced from the composition of the word hashtag, you can mark a term as a hashtag by preceding it with a hashtag.
For example, if you are writing a social media post about football, it is a good idea to use hashtags such as #football, #WM or #BVB. If, on the other hand, you are writing about gardening, you can use #flowers, #garden or #nature, for example.
Where exactly you place the hashtags in your social media posts is up to you. You can mark words scattered throughout the text as hashtags or put a collective list of all hashtags at the beginning or end of your text. Both approaches are common and work.
Tipp: Please note that hashtags consist exclusively of upper and lower case letters and numbers. Spaces or special characters are not allowed within a hashtag.
If a term is marked as a hashtag, a user of the respective platform can find the corresponding post by specifically searching for the hashtag or subscribing to it. This is usually possible via the search function of the social networks.
For example, enter #Football in the search on Facebook, Instagram or X. This will give you a list of posts tagged with this hashtag. You will also get the same result if you click on the hashtag #Football in the text of a post that you have already opened.
