Canal + has just completed the rebroadcast of season 1 of “Foundation”, a series already offered – and still available – on Apple TV +. This last platform is now taking over again with, from this Friday, the new episodes of season 2. They are eagerly awaited, the first salvo of adaptation of the novels and short stories of the eponymous saga by Isaac Asimov having blown away the majority of the spectators by its screenplay scope and its aesthetic biases.

Fans will therefore not be surprised with this season 2, which takes place almost a century and a half after the events told in the previous episodes. Remember, for neophytes, that the story takes place within a huge interstellar empire, in the very distant future. Hari Seldon, a scientist who created a new discipline, psychohistory, predicted that human civilization would soon collapse. Exiled by the Cleon dynasty who see him as a prophet of doom, Seldon was assassinated on his way to Terminus, a remote and arid planet. But his disciples have begun to implement his project, the Foundation (“Foundation” in English), which must eventually lead humanity towards a new Renaissance.

A series rich in themes and questions

The first season of the series had opened up a number of scriptwriting sites, keeping only the general plot lines of Asimov, who had begun to develop his story in the early 1940s, another era, and introducing many new characters. This second season of “Foundation” continues this momentum.

How will the inhabitants of Terminus fare, who will not be able to remain eternally hidden from the appetites of the Empire? How will the latter evolve, knowing that the genetic line of the Cleons, on the throne for centuries thanks to cloning, has been corrupted after sabotage? What will happen between Gaal, Seldon’s assistant, and her daughter, Salvor, whom she didn’t know existed, the two having found themselves on the former’s homeworld, engulfed by the waters? ?

Finally, if Seldon was indeed murdered, it is his body that passed from life to death, not his conscience, saved in a machine and which will continue to play an essential role…

In short, “Foundation” remains a series rich in themes and questions, where we talk about cloning, politics, terrorism, climate change, social classes, artificial intelligence… Dense content, most of the time well inserted into the story, but unfortunately sometimes giving rise to long introspections or dialogues that are not at all hermetic. Fortunately, the series knows how to catch the eye with its design that is both futuristic and loaded with symbols, and also occasionally throws in some solid action sequences.

Editor’s note:

“Foundation”, American science fiction series by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman, with Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobel… Season 2, episode 1/10 (about 50 mins), then a new one every Friday. On Apple TV+, available to Canal+ subscribers
