The main problem for trans women in Mexico is that there is no specific market. Normally, they usually carry out their hormonal treatment with birth control pills or with CIS women’s hormones. Although the compound is the same, there are many that are made to be taken over a period of time and you cannot continue taking them. That is why for a hormonal transition it can be complicated to continue taking the same type of hormones, since this can have consequences.
Trans women must take hormones for life
Not many trans women in Mexico can access these hormones with the care of an endocrinologist and most end up taking self-hormones. This is the main problem about the hormone market and it is that there is no specific one for trans people; that cisgender women would take them for a period of time because they do not take them for life.
On the other hand, for trans women it means taking them for life, since they need certain types of estrogen. Unlike the trans menthey have to take cross-hormonal treatment, with testosterone blockers, which is sometimes much more expensive than that of trans men.
There is also the black market
Trans women don’t just have to take estrogen (which is less strong than testosterone). In addition, trans men apply injections once a month and that’s it. On the other hand, transgender women have to apply them every two weeks. They take the pills every day and, sometimes, twice as many pills, which makes the treatment more expensive.
The main problem with the cost of hormones is precisely that the market is not made for trans women and their transition. If so, it would greatly reduce the cost of buying one for each item, in addition to researching which pharmacies sell them.
Although there is also a black market. It is not that many girls buy in this market but the worst thing is that each trans woman has a different body and buying pills without medical advice can be very dangerous.
