The Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR) opened an investigation into the crime of “Treason to the Fatherland” contra Joaquin Guzman Lopezson of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
To the surprise of more than one, it transpired that the crime of “Treason to the Fatherland” will be priority in research from Mexico regarding the capture of Ismael “el Mayo” Zambada in the United States.

The crime of treason in Mexico is regulated by the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States and is specified in the Federal Penal Code is article 123.
This crime may be imposed in the following situations:
- When a fellow countryman hands over a Mexican citizen to a foreign government or group
- When a Mexican citizen violates sovereignty and independence before a foreign government or group
Article 123 of the Federal Penal Code establishes that treason is committed by carrying out “acts against independencesovereignty or integrity of the Mexican Nation with the purpose of subjecting it to a foreign person, group or government.”
This crime is also violated when “a person is illegally deprived of his or her freedom in the national territory to hand him or her over to the authorities of another country or move it out of Mexico for this purpose.”
How is “Treason against the Fatherland” punished?
In case the accused, in this case Joaquin Guzman Lopez, is found guilty For committing treason against the country by handing over Ismael “el Mayo Zambada”, the penalties could range from fines to prison terms.
Through a statement, the FGR cited article 123 of the Federal Penal Code which establishes that “a penalty will be imposed Mexicans sentenced to 5 to 40 years in prison who commits treason against the country.”
