Childhood cancer threatens to overtake infectious diseases as one of the highest causes of death worldwide. This highlights the need for concerted global action to address the growing challenge posed by this non-communicable disease.

According to data provided by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), they have indicated that the global incidence of cancer in those under 20 years of age is growing. Specifically, it has gone from 165,000 new cases per year to 215,000 for children under 14 years of age and 85,000 new cases between 15 and 19 years of age. But, it is true that many of the cases remain without being accounted for or reported, since in many countries no records are made.

The probability of recovery in cases of childhood cancer is higher than in adults

Although the number of cases of childhood cancer is lower when compared to the worldwide incidence in adults, the probability of recovery is much higher. In high-income countries, the survival rate averages 84% while in Mexico, the average level is around 51%.

On the other hand, the International Childhood Cancer Organization (CCI) calls to ensure that children and adolescents around the world have the opportunity to survive cancer with long, productive and meaningful lives.

World leaders are called upon to act and help save the lives of children and adolescents

Although CCI is the world’s largest support organization for patients with childhood cancer, represented in Mexico by the Mexican Association for Help to Children with Cancer (PURPOSE). It is supported by the 1,800 health professionals from the 119 countries that are members of the International Society for Pediatric Oncology (SIOP).

From AMAMNC they have also joined the demand for world leaders to act and help save all children and adolescents with cancer. In particular, it has reiterated its position for the health authorities to investigate and clarify the alleged irregularities in the supply of cancer drugs in the state of Veracruz. Likewise, he has urged that the mechanisms for the purchase and distribution of chemotherapies in the country be reviewed.
