When buying a new or used electric car, one of the most important questions after the possible range is how long the battery life is, i.e. will it be necessary to replace the expensive battery sooner or later in our purchased car?
Battery capacity reduction (degradation) is a really important issue for those who want to switch to electric cars.
Many people believe that the more intensively they use their vehicle, the more its battery loses the performance specified by the manufacturer. This is fundamentally not true. The decrease in capacity varies much more with regard to charging temperature and speed, and it is also not correct to say that it is recommended to charge constantly for those who, for example, cover a distance of 10-20 km per day.
It can be seen that individual manufacturers give the longest warranty period precisely for the life damage of the batteries. This is surely not a coincidence.
If we follow a few basic guidelines, it is highly probable that today the life of the battery can be the same as the entire life of our electric car. The life cycle of our battery can be further protected with a few basic usage/charging tips.
Frequent draining of the cells and then full charging, unreasonably fast charging (in this case the internal temperature of the battery cells rises significantly) will certainly increase the overload, which can result in premature battery degradation. By rationally optimizing our charging habits, the lifespan of the battery can be significantly extended, providing us with a maintenance cost that can be calculated over a longer period of time.
According to an EU regulation valid by 2025, 65 percent of the mass of lithium batteries must be recycled. Battery technologies are under continuous development, which is also a forward-looking process in terms of environmental protection and energy efficiency. The first solid-state batteries are also expected to appear soon.
At Kállay Emobility by GlobeART-Group, we do not only focus on sales and service. We consider customer education, information and assistance and expert advice related to the use of electric cars to be our continuous mission. We consider it our mission to help our customers achieve optimal electric car use. At our location in Dunakesz, our colleagues are ready to welcome anyone interested, even with advice on battery charging. We hope that during one of these conversations, we will be able to give useful advice and clear up some groundlessly widespread misconceptions with electric car owners and those interested in electric driving.
