Proposals to house the Berlin Central and State Library (ZLB) in the building of the Galeries Lafayette department store have been on the table for a year. On Monday, the Academy of Arts invites you to a panel discussion about it. It will be led by the university’s new vice president, Anh-Linh Ngo, a proven architect. We ask you: What is the position of the library in relation to the university?

A lot if we consider that we are not only concerned with the dilapidated and overcrowded buildings of the city library and the American Memorial Library, but other social problems. The closing of department stores, as we have observed for twenty years, has a great impact on public spaces.

We artists, urban planners and architects would like to see this as an opportunity to reuse interior spaces with cultural offerings. At the same time, it is observed that young people are increasingly vulnerable to the methods of language and visual communication published by social media. We saw in the European elections that young people do not automatically think progressive. If we combine the two, we come to the question of what role the central library can play as a place for learning and encounters.

Sites are not just given, they have to be produced by the people who use them. It depends on how. When Manos Tsangaris and I ran for university president, we said we wanted to open social dialogue spaces. The Academy of Arts is not an ivory tower. Using the skills of the arts, we can contribute to examining the issues that are fatal in the city. We don’t want to attack each other passionately for or against or with hashtags, but we want to learn how to talk to each other again. I think the fact that ZLB can take a place in an area that is still inaccessible to many people culturally and economically is an important sign for urban society. We want to follow the discussion about this with the wisdom of our members.
