As it moved towards the northern Caribbean, Hurricane Lee intensified and became a powerful Category 4 hurricane on the Atlantic side, meteorological services reported.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecast, Lee could reach Category 5 this Friday, September 8, the highest level on the hurricane scale.

The powerful hurricane will generate “large swells” and “dangerous surf” in its wake that will begin to affect the US coast on Sunday, September 10.

National Hurricane Center forecasters warn that Lee “will remain a major hurricane through the weekend and well into next week” as it moves west-northwest.

Hurricane Lee was moving north of the Caribbean in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and was located north of the Lesser Antilles, according to the latest update on Thursday, September 7.

According to the forecast, Lee’s eye will move north of the northern Lesser Antilles in the coming days.

The main effects are its hurricane-force winds that extend up to 45 kilometers from its center.

Dangerous waves

Additionally, NHC meteorologists warn that dangerous waves generated by Lee will reach parts of the Lesser Antilles and then reach the British and US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Hispaniola and Bermuda this weekend.

“The environment around the cyclone appears ideal for rapid intensification,” the NHC said.

Lee is the 12th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30 and peaks in September.

The National Hurricane Center also reported that Tropical Storm Margot formed in the eastern Atlantic.

In the Pacific, Hurricane Jova was in open waters off the southwest coast of Mexico as a Category 5 storm, without making landfall.

The Insivumeh indicated this Wednesday, September 6, that in none of the cases, both Hurricane Lee, in the Atlantic, as well as Jova, in the Pacific, do they not represent a danger or threat to Guatemala.

However, the Guatemalan territory will register local rains and storms due to the effect of an Eastern wave.
