South Korea has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world. The fertility rate has decreased due to the women there going on strike to get married and have children, and some of the reasons behind it have now come to light.
Accordingly, according to a survey conducted in 2022, 65 percent of South Korean women have come to the conclusion that they do not want children, according to the New York Times.
The reasons behind this, they say, are long working hours, rising house rents and poor job opportunities. For these reasons, the New York Times mentioned in its news that both men and women are reluctant to get married in South Korea.
The women mentioned that although men face long working hours, poor job opportunities and economic problems, they do not participate in housework citing these pressures. As a result, women who go to work, along with housework, are burdened with the pressure of having children, so they prevent fertility by claiming that they are not a child-bearing machine.
In this regard, from the side of the women, “Though both the husband and wife go to work, social pressure is also imposed that only women do all the work at home. Discrimination is also shown at workplaces during pregnancy, which is detrimental to our professional life.
Although the total population of the world has reached 800 crores, even today the competition of which country has the largest population continues. But South Koreans are not interested in getting married.
Earlier, it was reported that the number of single people in South Korea is only 72 lakh. The country’s National Statistics Office has said that the number of unmarried people, which was 15.5 percent in 2000, will increase to 40 percent in 2050, and if the same situation continues, then two out of five people will be single.
