Cystic fibrosis (called ) is one of the most serious and common genetic diseases in children. Without timely diagnosis and proper treatment, it leads to death in early stages of life. In Mexico, 1 in every 60 people is a carrier of the cystic fibrosis gene.

Most common symptoms of cystic fibrosis

As for the most common symptoms that can be mentioned when talking about this disease, the following can be highlighted:

Frequent respiratory infections. Excessive loss of salt through sweat (known as dehydration). Thin appearance and inability to gain weight despite having a good appetite. Chronic diarrhea or fatty stools. Chronic cough. Shortness of breath with physical activity. Chronic sinusitis. Malnutrition to varying degrees and a slightly bulging abdomen.

What is clear is that this is a complex disease for which, today, there is no definitive cure. Although, it is true that, every year, new forms of treatment improve or appear. In Mexico, there are around 6 thousand children with cystic fibrosis, who do not have access to specialized treatment.

Treatment for patients with cystic fibrosis must be multidisciplinary and lifelong. This represents a cost that is difficult to absorb for the majority of families that do not have health or social security services.

In Mexico there is no specific center

In the country, there is no Cystic Fibrosis Center in which a team of specialists is integrated and that has the necessary infrastructure for the comprehensive management of patients with this disease. Normally, with current resources and infrastructure, patients achieve an average survival of 17 years.

This makes it necessary to join forces to be able to influence public policies, thus calling on the Health authorities, so that they pay attention to the urgent need to support high-cost pathologies for the health and pocket of the patient and his family. family.

Seguro Popular has been a great initiative to begin to be equitable in guaranteeing the right to health for all Mexicans; although it needs to be perfected and include other diseases and pathologies in the Catastrophic Expenses Fund. This is part of the Social Health Protection System and seeks to provide highly specialized medical services to people who do not have Social Security and suffer from high-cost diseases that can put their lives and family assets at risk, as is the case of cystic fibrosis.
