Judith Mangelsdorf is a happiness researcher. In an interview, she talks about whether people are happier in a relationship than single people, what role money plays and to what extent we can take our happiness into our own hands.

Ms. Mangelsdorf, are people in relationships happier than single people?

Statistically, yes. If you look at who the happiest people are, far more of them are in relationships. But that doesn’t mean that single people can’t lead very happy lives.

The number of singles is increasing. In large cities in particular, up to 50 percent are now single. Does that also do something to our society?

Absolutely. We are currently experiencing – as the World Health Organization has already stated – something like a second pandemic: a pandemic of loneliness. And of course, not everyone who is single is lonely. But more and more people are tending to withdraw, to individualize and also to bind themselves less strongly. And that has major implications for happiness and health.
