Half a century of waiting

The European Championship has been held since 1960 every four years. At first it was called the European Cup of Nations, in 1968 it was renamed, and in the same year it was won by Italy, playing at home against Yugoslavia. The first match ended in a draw 1: 1, and the Italians won the replay with a score of 2: 0. In the final, the same teams could meet as in the first Euro of 1960 – the USSR and Yugoslavia. In the semifinals, the Soviet team drew with the Italian one – 0: 0. Post-match penalties were not applied then, the finalist was determined by the draw: the toss of a 10-franc coin. More Italians did not win the European Championship until this year.
