Lauterbach’s plan to end health insurance reimbursement for homeopathic and anthroposophical services should not only affect medication, but also medical fees. But privileges remain.

Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) caused a stir two weeks ago with an announcement: health insurance companies should no longer have the option in their statutes to voluntarily reimburse costs for homeopathic and anthroposophical offers. “Services that have no medically proven benefit may not be financed from contributions,” says a paper from his company. Although the Social Security Code also states that the quality and effectiveness of services must “correspond to the generally recognized state of medical knowledge and take medical progress into account,” many health insurance companies have so far made use of exceptions.

But it is not only unclear whether the plan will ultimately receive enough votes in the Bundestag or whether it is more an attempt to distract from the dire state of the treasury finances. But it initially remained unclear what exactly Lauterbach had in mind. This can now be seen from an internal draft of the “Health Care Strengthening Act” that has not yet been agreed upon in the cabinet. The use of the funds should be based “exclusively on the independent decision of the insured to finance these services and not be financed by the collective of insured persons of the health insurance company(s),” it says: An exclusion clause should be included in the Social Security Code, which also includes so-called selective contracts on anthroposophy and would prevent homeopathy.
