Markus Söder is known for his humorous social media posts. But his latest snapshot from his childhood also raises questions.

Markus Söder is known above all as a politician who makes headlines with pithy statements. His ambitions to one day become Chancellor or at least to run as the Union’s candidate for Chancellor do not seem to have been completely dispelled for next year’s election. It is clear that Söder does not only portray himself as a man of power – he also repeatedly shows his human side.

Subscribers to his Instagram account, for example, know Markus Söder, who posts a picture of his meals almost every day under the hashtag #Söderisst. The Nuremberg native focuses on meaty food: from currywurst to kebabs to hearty snacks, he has eaten everything. But now Söder is surprising his fans with something completely different: a picture of a child.

The occasion is the start of school in his state of Bavaria. The 57-year-old wrote alongside a picture of himself as a little schoolboy: “A good start to school everyone! I especially wish the first-graders a great first day of school. Like everyone else, I was very excited back then.”

Söder was most “looking forward to the school cone,” he writes. Söder also provides information about the exact background of the photo. He says: “The photo is from my first day of school in Nuremberg in 1973.”

The outfit in particular catches the eye. A checked peaked cap, a yellow turtleneck sweater and a brown jacket with a large double collar. “My mother chose the checked cap,” writes Söder, adding with a wink: “Any resistance was futile.”

Some comments, however, have focused on a different detail. For example, users on Instagram are apparently astonished: “A green school cone for Markus Söder?” A reference to Söder’s political arch-enemy: the Greens. The CSU politician repeatedly rails against the alleged “banning party” – and sometimes faces backlash when he himself issues bans in his state, as he did a few months ago, such as the gender ban in schools.
